Implicative correlation between elevated maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein and low birth weight

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: An altered maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein level is a predictor of obstetric complications.
Objective: To identify the possible association between elevated maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein and low birth weight in relation to other factors.
Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, and analytical study was conducted in two health areas of Santiago de Cuba municipality. The study population consisted of 612 mothers who received prenatal care in these areas during the study period and who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Alpha-fetoprotein levels, birth weight, pregnancy duration, maternal age, and other factors were considered. Multivariate relationships were confirmed using implicative statistical analysis.
Results: Low birth weight neonates were associated with elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels, abnormal Doppler ultrasound, small size for gestational age, and preterm delivery. There was no association with a history of smoking or hypertension.
Conclusions: This finding reinforces the scientific evidence for the use of alpha-fetoprotein as a marker of low birth weight.
Keywords: Alpha-fetoprotein; low birth weight; prenatal diagnosis; maternal and child health; prenatal testing; implicative statistical analysis.
