Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a public health challenge, and data management for the Xpert MTB/RIF assay (fully automated nucleic acid amplification test using a cartridge to diagnose tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance) was performed in the laboratory of Holguín using Excel spreadsheets with limitations in integrity, validation, and scalability. The objective was to design and implement a relational database that would overcome these shortcomings. A technological innovation was applied (September 2024–January 2025) combining document analysis, laboratory staff interviews, and Entity-Relationship modeling to create the “Xpert TBD” prototype. Entities (record, samples, vulnerable groups, origin, municipalities, provinces) and one-to-many relationships were defined using Access to ensure referential integrity. Input forms, parameterized queries, and dynamic reports (annual, monthly, and weekly summaries) were developed with automatic validations, calculated fields, and graphs. As a result, the new platform centralized more than three years of data into a single file, reduced capture errors, improved analytical capacity, and optimized operational times. It was concluded that the implemented system strengthens the reliability of records and facilitates epidemiological surveillance. It also proposes hierarchical access levels to ensure security and confidentiality.
